Metabolic rate measurements can be helpful in weight management and nutrition assessments. In this office, we use an indirect calorimeter to screen for abnormally low (or high) metabolic rates, teach energy balance and pinpoint the precise caloric intake required for weight loss. This can be extremely helpful in treating obesity as well as obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, hypothyroidism and sleep apnea. After completion of this metabolic test, your physician will be able to formulate weight loss recommendations for you based on your individual metabolism. He or she will track your progress over time and give additional diet and exercise recommendations as necessary.
The ReeVue system is an FDA cleared device that measures the amount of oxygen an individual consumes at rest. During the test, you will breathe into a machine for approximately ten minutes. It is important to get into a comfortable position and stay as relaxed as possible during the exam. The test is quick and painless. Using the information gathered, the machine will calculate your Resting Energy Expenditure or REE. This is also known as your Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR.
